Custom-Crafted Orthotics

Orthotics Dr Edward M. Lang, DPM

For over three decades, our chief podiatrist, Dr. Edward M. Lang, has evaluated and treated a variety of foot and ankle deformities. Dr. Lang is an expert in the design and use of custom-made orthotics, and they are an invaluable resource in his approach to conservative care. His 'Sole Doc' Brand has been handcrafted for over thirty years and is manufactured to his specifications by some of the most accomplished pedorthist in the industry.

What Are Custom-Crafted Orthotics?

Custom-made orthotics are shoe inserts that our podiatrist and his team design and make specifically for the contour of your feet. They are often recommended as a short-term solution to decrease pain by increasing the efficiency of dysfunctional feet. The long-term plan is to locate the etiology of the dysfunction, correct it over time, and move you out of the orthotic devices soon as possible.

How they Are Made

A thorough medical evaluation of your foot health includes biomechanics and gait analysis. A 3-D scan of your feet is obtained in our office, and wooden models of your feet are subsequently milled in our laboratory. The devices are then crafted from the models and shipped back to our office for inspection. Once received, modifications are sometimes necessary to expand the customization; this last step ensures the product you receive is customized to your foot for comfort and function.

Conditions for which  Custom-Crafted Orthotics are Prescribed

  • Arthritis
  • True Fixed Forefoot Varus
  • Hammertoes
  • Limb length discrepancy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Posterior tibial dysfunction or dislocation
  • Rear-foot valgus, in which the back of the foot curves outward at the ankle joint
  • Stabilization and reduction of bunion pain
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic Tendonitis
  • Heel Pain

For the Pediatric Patient

Dr. Edward Lang prefers a holistic approach to the developing foot and often recommends 'minimalist' or 'barefoot' shoes to his pediatric patients. However, some pediatric cases warrant early intervention. For example, children severely "pigeon-toed" or diagnosed with a fixed forefoot varus are often candidates for custom-made orthotics.

Additional Conditions Affecting Our Pediatric Patients Include:

  • Flat feet ( usually nothing to worry about )
  • Equines gait ( toe walkers )
  • In-toeing- the feet turn inward instead of pointing straight ahead when a child walks or runs ( pigeon toed )
  • Limb length discrepancy
  • Out-toeing- the feet turn outward instead of pointing straight ahead when a child walks or runs
  • Rear-foot valgus, placing weight on the inside of the foot
