Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) often develops gradually and may go unnoticed in its early stages. As the infection progresses, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • White Spots or Streaks Early fungal infections may appear as small white marks or streaks on the nail surface. These can gradually spread and become more noticeable.
  • Yellow or Discolored Toenails Infected nails often take on a yellow, brown, or cloudy appearance as the fungus spreads beneath the nail plate.
  • Thickened, Brittle, or Crumbly Nails The nail may become thicker than normal and begin to crack, crumble, or split. This change in texture is a common sign of a deeper fungal infection.
  • Foul Odor A musty or unpleasant smell may develop, particularly if the infection is longstanding or combined with excess moisture or sweat.
  • Pain or Discomfort As the infection worsens, the affected toenail may become tender, painful, or sensitive to pressure—especially when wearing shoes.

Treatments

At New Orleans Podiatry, we offer a range of proven treatments to eliminate toenail fungus and restore healthy, clear nails. Treatment options are tailored to the severity of the infection and your individual health needs.

  • Topical Antifungal Medications: These medicated creams, lacquers, or solutions are applied directly to the nail and surrounding skin. Topical treatments are most effective in mild to moderate cases and may be used alongside other therapies for enhanced results.
  • Oral Antifungal Medications Prescription oral antifungals work from within the bloodstream to target the infection at its source. These are often recommended for more advanced or persistent fungal infections and typically require monitoring by your doctor.
  • PinPointe FootLaser™ Therapy This FDA-cleared laser treatment uses focused light energy to penetrate the nail and destroy the fungus without damaging surrounding tissue. It's a safe, painless, and highly effective option for patients seeking a non-invasive, drug-free solution.

Our goal is to treat the infection at its source while preventing recurrence. During your consultation, Dr. Lang will evaluate your condition and recommend the most effective treatment plan to restore the health and appearance of your nails.
