Pregnant Mother Set to Participate in Running Marathon

35-year-old Granton resident Marion Laverty is training for a marathon set to take place on May 25. Laverty will take place in the marathon even though she is actually pregnant with her second child. Fortunately, the mom to be has the support and approval of her doctor and midwife. Her goal is to finish within three hours and fifteen minutes. To achieve that goal, Laverty works in a regimen of light aerobic exercises and short jogs, keeping her training gentle and light.

Expectant mothers are generally encouraged to exercise during their pregnancy. When it comes to participating in the marathon, Lavery says, “I’m not advocating every pregnant woman does it, but if it’s something you have always done, research will tell you that you are capable.”

Even if they are in good shape, pregnant women need to care for their feet. If you are experiencing discomfort in your feet due to pregnancy, see podiatrist Dr. Edward Lang of New Orleans Podiatry Associates. Dr. Lang can treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise during Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward. This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy during Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly.
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot.
  • Wear shoes with good arch support.
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet.
  • Elevate your feet if you experience swelling.
  • Massage your feet.
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet.
