Lapiplasty®—The Gold Standard in Bunion Surgery

Lapiplasty®—The Gold Standard in Bunion Surgery

Image

Bunions, medically known as hallux valgus, are complex, three-dimensional deformities resulting from instability in the mid-foot joint. This instability allows the metatarsal bone to drift out of alignment, leading to the characteristic bony protrusion and discomfort associated with bunions.

Traditional surgical approaches often focus on removing the visible bump or realigning the bone in only one or two planes, which may not address the underlying joint instability. This limitation can result in higher recurrence rates and prolonged recovery times.

The Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ procedure offers a comprehensive solution by correcting the deformity in all three planes and stabilizing the root cause—joint instability. Developed by Treace Medical Concepts, Inc., this advanced surgical technique utilizes specialized instrumentation to realign the metatarsal bone to its proper anatomical position, addressing the transverse, sagittal, and frontal planes. By doing so, it restores normal foot biomechanics and significantly reduces the likelihood of bunion recurrence.

How Lapiplasty® Works

The procedure involves several key steps:

Correction – The surgeon uses the Lapiplasty® Positioner to realign the metatarsal bone in all three planes, establishing and holding true anatomical alignment.

Cut – With the bone held in the corrected position, precise cuts are made using the Lapiplasty® Cut Guide, ensuring optimal cut trajectory while minimizing metatarsal shortening.

Compress – The Lapiplasty® Compressor applies controlled compression to the joint surfaces, promoting optimal healing conditions.

Fixate – Low-profile, biplanar titanium plating is applied to stabilize the correction, allowing for a rapid return to weight-bearing activities.

The Benefits of Lapiplasty®

Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the Lapiplasty® procedure. Patients have experienced a return to weight-bearing in a walking boot in less than two weeks, with 97% to 99% maintaining their 3D correction at 13 and 17 months follow-up, respectively (Ray et al., 2019).
