Library of Foot and Ankle Conditions

Ankle Instability

Ankle instability is a condition in which it feels as though the outer side of your ankle is going to give way.

Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is a soft tissue injury that most frequently happens when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn.

Arthritis

Arthritis is the painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. Although we might most commonly associate arthritis with our hands, with 28 bones and more than 30 joints in the foot, arthritis can also plague those extremities, too.

Athlete's Foot

A chronic, contagious infection caused by various types of fungi known as dermatophytes, athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, does not affect only athletes. Athlete's foot usually starts between the toes or on the arches, but it can spread to the bottoms and sides of your feet.

Bone Spurs

Bone spurs are very common foot problems. They develop most frequently in the heel, near the toes, or on top of the big toe joint.

Bunions

A bunion is a bone deformity caused by an enlargement of the joint at the base and side of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). Bunions form when the toe moves out of place.

Fitness And Your Feet

Your feet are two of the most overlooked body parts when it comes to exercise. As you exercise, pay attention to what your feet are telling you.

Foot Drop

Foot drop (or drop foot) describes a condition in which you are unable to lift the front part of your foot, which causes the toes to drag on the ground.

Fractures

Nearly one fourth of all the bones in your body are in your feet. A broken or fractured bone in your forefoot or in one of your toes is often painful, but it is rarely disabling.

Fungal Toenails

Toenail fungus is also known as onychomycosis. Fungi make up one of the kingdoms of the natural world and include organisms like yeasts and mushrooms. Fungi feed off of organic matter, and since you are organic, they can live off of you as well, including underneath your toenails.

Hammertoes

A hammertoe is a deformity of the toe in which the toe is bent at the middle joint, causing it to resemble an inverted V or a hammer.

Ingrown Nails

Ingrown nails are nails whose corners or sides dig painfully into the skin, often causing infection. Ingrown toenails most often affect your big toe.

Morton's Neuroma

A neuroma is an enlarged, benign growth of nerves. It is a thickening of the tissue around the nerve and is sometimes referred to as a "pinched nerve." Morton's neuroma is a thickening of tissues around the nerve that leads to the toes.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy (also called peripheral neuropathy) refers to the damage of the nerves in the peripheral parts of your body--namely, your fingers and toes.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis (or heel pain) is commonly traced to an inflammation on the bottom of the foot. Our practice can evaluate arch pain, and may prescribe customized shoe inserts called orthoses to help alleviate the pain.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are warts that appear on the soles of the feet. No, those toads hopping into your backyard from the drainage canal do not cause warts; instead, the human papillomavirus is the culprit.

Sports Injuries

Whether you're playing in a kick ball league, working on your serves to make a run at Wimbledon, or building up your stamina for next year's Crescent City Classic, foot injuries can happen when you're engaged in sports or other athletic activities.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a compression of the posterior tibial nerve, which is located within the tarsal tunnel. The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space on the inside of the ankle next to the ankle bones.
